Ik leerde Gérard Wolthaar kennen als verkoper van automaterialen in Culemborg. Per toeval kwamen we er achter beide interesse te hebben in de rallysport. Vele gesprekken volgden over deze passie. Gaande weg vertelde hij me dat hij bij hem thuis een stukje zolder omgetoverd had tot museum van model rally auto's. Z’n droom was een echt museum op te zetten. Het is een voortvloeisel van de verzamelwoede van Gérard die het liefst alles wil hebben wat te maken heeft met de rallysport. In 1975 raakte hij in de ban van de rallysport, tijdens een bezoek aan de ELE-Rally te Eindhoven. Zo begon hij met het bouwen van rallyauto’s op schaal (1:24). Door zijn drang naar perfectie werden boeken en ander naslagwerk gekocht en verzameld. Dat liep na een tijdje aardig uit de hand en daarop besloot hij zich te specialiseren tot het Wereld-Kampioen-schap Rallyrijden en richt in 1986 het Mini-Rally-Museum (inmiddels vernoemd naar World-Rally-Musem)  op. Vanaf het begin van het seizoen probeert hij jaarin jaaruit materialen te bemachtigen, zelfs onderdelen van auto’s kom je er tegen. Een archief vanaf 1973, mappen met handtekeningen, ansichtkaarten en zelfs postzegels bezetten zijn “ boekenkast “. Ook originele Rallytassen, Rallyattribuiten en puzzels hebben daar een plekje gekregen. Het blijft voor hem een kick als er weer post uit bijvoorbeeld Nieuw Zeeland of elders in de brievenbus ligt. Vakanties worden, zo mogelijk, om WK-Rally’s geboekt, zodat contact met rijders gewaarborgd is! Inmiddels is de zolder ingeruild voor een garagebox en op zijn 18 M2 krijg je een goed beeld van de geschiedenis van het WK Rally. Gérard weet altijd wel wat nieuws te melden. Dus bijzonder de moeite waard om eens een bezoekje te brengen aan het World-Rally-Museum.

I met Gérard Wolthaar as a sales person of car materials in Culemborg. By coincidence we did get to know that we did have a similar hobby “Rally racing”.  When we knew about our hobby, many conversations followed about this hobby. Due these conversations he told me he had a ceiling where he builds his own private museum with small model rally cars. He told me that his dream was to make a real museum. He collected every thing that has something to do with rally racing

At 1975 he became infected with rally racing thru a visit at the ELE-rally in Eindhoven the Netherlands. That was the moment when he starts building scale models on scale 1:24. But thru the desire of perfection he starts collecting books and other material where he could find the details from the cars. After a while things are getting out of hand, and that was the moment he specialised on the world championship rally driving. He started in 1986 the mini-rally-museum. From the beginning of the season, he starts trying to collect items from over the whole world, year after year if it had something to do with the world rally championship.

If you look at the collection now, you can see a nice overview over the past years of rally racing, from rallycarshields, medals, race overalls, posters and official PR books, even original parts of the cars are in the collection. The archive starts from 1973, maps with signatures, postcards and post stamps in his bookcase. Even original rally bags, other attributes en jigsaw puzzles got there on place in the museum. For Gérard it is a kick when there is another package form New Zealand or some where else from the world in his mailbox. Vacations are carefully planned thru the schedule of the world championship rally so he can visit as much rally’s if possible. There for the contact whit teams and drivers is still optimal. When time fly’s by the collection was getting bigger and bigger there for the ceiling as been changed for an 18 square meters garage box. On this 18 square meters you will get a good overview about the past rally racing years. On every visit you make at the museum Gérard always has something new to tell you. There for it is a must to visit the WORLD RALLY MUSEUM.

 

And what is the price of admission? Well it is not much but only a small expansion for his collection.
